CHAPTER 26

Craig Stanton was in the hospital by 6:30 Saturday morning asking for the room number for his partner. He was carrying a bouquet of roses he had purchased at the Huffman Avenue Safeway store. The woman at the desk gave him the room number and he walked to the elevator. On the fourth floor, he stepped out of the elevator and checked the signs for directions to the room. There was a small commons area halfway down the hall. There, sitting alone was Captain Davis.

“Good morning, Craig,” the captain greeted. “Did you get any sleep?”

“Some. Have you seen her?”

“No, the doctor was in her room when I arrived. He should be finished soon,” the commander spoke quietly.

Craig was about to sit when a nurse came in and called to the captain. “You can go in now. The doctor has finished.”

The two men walked quietly to the room, tapped on the door and entered. Karen was awake, sitting up in bed attempting to drink a container of orange juice. The left side of her face was a brilliant blue-green. Her left eye was swollen shut and her left arm below her shoulder matched her bruised face.

“Are you up to a couple of visitors this morning?” the captain asked.

“Come in, Cap, and bring my partner with you.”

“Some girls will do anything to get flowers,” Craig teased. He found a plastic container near the sink and filled it with water. The roses fit nicely.

“What did the doctor tell you,” asked the captain.

“He wants to keep me a few days. The x-rays didn’t show anything broken, but he says I have a concussion. They want to watch me in case of blood clots from the bruising. I hurt all over. I am bruised down my entire left side to my ankle. I remember being hit from the rear, but I don’t remember anything about being hit on the left side. Are the other drivers all right?”

“They are both fine. The girl who hit you from behind was wearing a seatbelt and only had a bruised knee. You would have been a lot worse if the plow driver hadn’t dropped his blade at the last second. That was quick thinking on his part.” There was sadness in the captain’s voice.

“I will have to thank him when I get out of here.” It was difficult for her to speak through the swollen cheeks and lips. “You may have to work alone for a few days, partner.”

Craig smiled at her. “I don’t want you to scare the customers, looking like you do. Can I bring you anything: food, books, make-up?”

“Maybe in a few days, but right now I just want to rest and hide my face.”

“I think that’s a good idea,” said the captain. “Craig and I will leave and visit again later. Don’t hesitate to call us if you want anything at all. Get well.”

“Thanks, Cap. I will. Craig, stay on top of Carlton.” She was still giving orders.

Before leaving the hospital, the two men held a short conference.
